Oven-Baked Orange

Oven-Baked Orange

About the Recipe

Sun-dried dehydrated oranges are citrus slices that undergo a preservation process involving the gradual removal of moisture. This method results in a concentrated, sweet-tart flavor profile that is both intense and delightful. The oranges also take on a vibrant, stained-glass appearance, making them visually appealing and unique.

Traditionally, these oranges were dried in direct sunlight, allowing the natural heat and light to slowly evaporate the water content. This enhanced their natural flavors and colors. However, in modern times, recipes often utilize a food dehydrator or oven to achieve a more consistent and controlled “sun-dried” texture. This modern approach ensures that the oranges dry evenly and efficiently, preserving their quality and flavor.

The slow drying process is crucial as it prevents the oranges from becoming too brittle or losing their natural sweetness. Once fully dehydrated, the orange slices are ready to be used in various ways. They are popular for holiday decorations, where their bright colors and intricate patterns add a festive touch to wreaths, garlands, and centerpieces. In the culinary world, dehydrated orange slices are often used to enhance the flavor of beverages, such as teas, cocktails, and infused waters, by adding a subtle citrus note. They also serve as an elegant decoration for desserts, cakes, and pastries, providing both visual appeal and a burst of flavor.

Preparation

Wash and thoroughly dry the oranges.

Use a sharp knife or a mandolin to cut the oranges into thin, even slices, about ¼  to ⅜ inch thick.

Pat the slices with a paper towel to remove excess moisture from the surface.

Lay the slices in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet ensuring they don't overlap to allow for even drying.

Bake at a low temperature, 200 degrees Fahrenheit, flipping the slices every hour.
