Ingredients
2 oranges or lemons
1 cup sugar
2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
¾ cup water
Preparation
Cut oranges into ⅛ inch-thick rounds and discard the seeds.
In a large skillet, combine sugar, orange juice, and water over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
Add the orange slices and simmer gently, ensuring they remain in a single layer. Turn the slices occasionally. Cook for 14 to 16 minutes, or until they are slightly translucent and the rinds are softened.
Remove the skillet from the heat.
Place the orange slices in a single layer in a wax paper-lined jelly roll pan, using tongs.
Allow the slices to cool completely, which should take about 1 hour.
Cover the pan and refrigerate for 2 hours to 2 days.
Reserve the syrup for another use.
